How can you protect your children during a divorce?

Divorce is one of the most difficult issues for children. However, Indiana parents can protect their kids with these steps during such a trying time.

Avoid using your child as a messenger

Putting your child in the middle of your divorce is one of the worst things you could do. Using them as a messenger to get a message across to your ex can hurt your child and strain your relationship. Instead, you should directly communicate with your former spouse.

Talk to your child

Treat your child with respect and talk openly with them. They should understand that while you are no longer going to be together, you both still love them very much. Stress that you will both always be there as their parents.

Work together with your ex

Even if you and your spouse have differences of opinion on certain matters, it benefits your child if you work together. You can decide on a co-parenting plan that works for everyone. You both want what’s best for your child, which is the most important thing.

Avoid going to court

One of the best ways you can protect your child during a divorce is to avoid going to court. Litigation can be highly emotional and bitter. It can result in fighting between you and your estranged spouse and can only hurt your child in the long run. The better option is to have divorce mediation, which allows you to work together and agree on the terms of your split.

Be careful when introducing a new significant other

After a while, you might have a new love interest and want to introduce them to your child. You should be careful and give enough time after your divorce before doing that. Go slowly once you bring your new significant other into the picture. Moving too quickly can cause resentment in your child.
