Deciding to go through a divorce in Indiana can be challenging in almost any situation. However, if your spouse is a narcissist, then there could be the increased difficulty associated with trying to break free from the other person. Here are a few tips you can keep in mind throughout the process, including handling opposition, receiving support and providing ample documentation.

Opposition

When you divorce a narcissist, one of the things that you could encounter is a challenge, this could be at the beginning of the proceedings as the other party might try to fight against ending the relationship to avoid signing the paperwork so the divorce can be finalized. The other party could also challenge you by utilizing various legal avenues to prevent you from getting money or custody of children you might have together.

Support

While you might think that you can handle divorcing a narcissist on your own, there could be times when the struggle of emotional challenges can be overwhelming. A support system that includes your family and friends can be beneficial so that you have someone to talk to about your concerns. It can also be helpful to have someone to turn to if you feel your safety is threatened or if you need to escape the situation if you’re still living in the same home as the other party.

Document

Get as much information and decisions as possible in writing so that the other party can’t say that you’re lying. Misrepresenting the facts is often a common trait among narcissists, and if you don’t have details in writing, it could result in losing some of the benefits you deserve.

Throughout the divorce process with someone who is a narcissist, there are a few things that you can do that can make each step a bit easier while giving you the protection that you need.
